Overview
The Mermaid Hotel and Club is nestled in a vast coconut grove along a stretch of golden sandy beach in Mahawaskaduwa, a cosy fishing village in the city of Kalutara, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
The hotel has seen three refurbishments and upgradings since 1999 and has kept pace with changing international standards. The Mermaid continues to maintain the most favoured hotel status amongst all Kalutara beach hotels.
The hotel boasts seventy-two standard rooms equipped with modern amenities and nine spacious deluxe rooms opened in September 2010 that afford absolute luxury and comfort with direct views of the garden and sea beyond. Facilities include two swimming pools, a restaurant with an alfresco dining area, three bars and a sports centre which offers a range of activities.
With its main swimming pool surrounded by sun lounges and beautifully manicured gardens extending to the shoreline, this is the ideal retreat for a relaxed getaway. The Mermaid Club is located adjacent to the hotel away from the main buildings and offers a wide range of sports and recreational activities.
Kalutara derives its name from the ‘Kalu Ganga’ or Black River. During colonial times, Kalutara was a hub for the spice trade and still has many must-see fortifications that date back to the Portuguese, Dutch and British occupations of Sri Lanka.
Another attraction not to be missed is the world’s only three-story high, hollow stupa that was built on the premises of the Kalutara Vihara in the 1960s.
Travel time from the Bandaranayake International Airport (BIA) to this warm and friendly Kalutara hotel (45 miles) is approximately two hours and a little over one hour from the capital city of Colombo (24 miles).
